There are few stories that capture the essence of passion and perseverance quite like that of Lacey Powell, the new dance instructor at the YMCA. Born and raised in the Florida panhandle, Powell’s journey transcends geographical boundaries, echoing the rhythm of life itself.

Powell’s journey began with an unexpected twist, a reluctant entrance into a Zumba class, dragged along by her persistent mother.

“I started my journey with my mom dragging me kicking and screaming to a Zumba class like in 2009,” she reminisces.

Driven by a determination to conquer the dance floor, Powell’s journey swiftly evolved from a casual pursuit to a lifelong dedication.

“I got annoyed because I couldn’t figure out the moves. So, I was like, I’m going to learn it,” she recalls, narrating the pivotal moment that propelled her towards becoming an instructor. With each step, she delved deeper into the intricate world of dance.

From the shores of Florida to the far reaches of Ukraine, Powell’s journey unfolded across continents, weaving a tapestry of experiences rich in diversity and vibrancy.

“Since 2013, I’ve been competing and teaching and traveling all over the world,” she shared.

According to Powell, dance is just walking through space to a rhythm.

“It helps build neural pathways that aren’t normally there, helps myelinate those neural pathways,” said Powell. “There’s been studies that show that partner dancing in and of itself can help with dementia and Alzheimer’s.”

Powell enjoys the swing styles of dance, including Carolina Shag, Balboa, East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop.

For Powell, dance is more than just a hobby; it is a way of life, a testament to the boundless possibilities that unfold when passion meets purpose.

As she embarks on the next chapter of her journey, here at the YMCA, Powell remains steadfast in her commitment to inspire, empower, and uplift those around her. With each graceful step, she leaves an indelible mark on the world.

In the symphony of life, Lacey Powell dances to her own rhythm; a melody of resilience, creativity, and boundless joy.

“I hope my dynamic with students is just more personal and more of how I can make their experience the best it possibly can,” said Powell.
