Partners With Youth Campaign

Campaign Goal – $130,000

Annually the YMCA of the Coastal Bend conducts a Partner with Youth Annual Sustaining Campaign which raises the much needed funds to support children and families in our community as well as enlarges the volunteer base for our YMCA.  This annual campaign intertwines the efforts of more than 50 volunteers who receive more than 250 gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations in an effort to fund support for our YMCA. These generous gifts ensure that financial hardship will never be a barrier to anyone with the desire to participate in YMCA membership and program opportunities here in the Coastal Bend. The goal of the Campaign is to ensure the resources of the YMCA are available to everyone in our community.

The YMCA mission is the foundation of all our programs and activities.  The annual Partners with Youth Campaign is a major driver of our mission to make and fulfill promises to kids, families and communities.  Following last year’s outstanding work in raising $76,485 in pledges, this year, the YMCA is being asked to consider $438,622 in needs for key programs.  The YMCA will combine our volunteer fundraising effort with the United Way and local foundations to make sure our programs are accessible to all.

What will our funds support?

Partners with Youth to Create Future Leaders

The YMCA allocates  scholarships for youth and teens to attend Y-Leaders and Youth and Government programs. Youth in middle school and high school need to be connected with positive, caring adults who encourage them to stay in school, set goals and discover what interests they can cultivate. During their out-of-school time, they need to be engaged in activities that stress academic excellence, career enhancement, civic engagement and life management skills. Teens need safe places to go after school, on weekends and during the summer months to be engaged in healthy activities and establishing strong relationships that are values-based and character focused – they need adult role models/mentors to help them transition well to adulthood. Every young person participating in this program earns a free YMCA membership.

Y-Middle School Leaders Clubs : builds future leaders for our nation by developing citizenship and leadership skills while encouraging academic improvement, development of self-esteem, and participation in community service projects.  The leaders program teaches Robert Rules, Service Learning and Citizenship.

High School Youth and Government: are civic engagement programs that give youth an exciting experience in the mechanics of state government. Y & G provides opportunities for youth to study and debate public issues, experience the judicial branch of state government, write legislation and participate in a Youth Legislature. Students across the State of Texas participate in their local District Conferences and culminate their year of learning about how government works by becoming the State’s leaders during a mock legislative session at the State Y & G conference in Austin.

Partners to Instill Confidence in Our Youth

The YMCA allocates  scholarships for our Youth Tutoring program.  The network of services includes tutoring, educational, social and recreational activities.  During the school year YMCA program participants receive tutoring five days per week.

Partners for All

The YMCA allocates  scholarships for membership to our facility.  Here, our families can take advantage of a variety of opportunities.

Partners in Program Quality

The YMCA will survey program participants (or their parents) in order to improve YMCA programs, starting with our after-school and teen programs. The YMCA will measure how individual programs make a difference, and why; assist program directors to make quality improvements resulting in more impact and higher enrollments; and provide the YMCA with credible outcome documentation to share with stakeholders.

YMCA Program Facts

The YMCA hosts several camp programs throughout the year: Fall Camp, Winter Holiday Camp, Spring Break Camp, and Summer Day Camp. Each camp is filled with arts and crafts, games, educational events, special guests, and much more! In 2016, we had 1,048 participants attend our camp programs; 27 received financial assistance with a total amount of $4,081. Our most popular camp program is our Summer Day Camp, which consists of 12 weeks occurring May through August. Our camp programs give each child the opportunity to explore their unique talents and interests, experience positive behaviors, and learn the YMCA core values.

Our Youth Sports Programs focus on learning sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect. Throughout the year, we offer soccer, basketball, volleyball, and t-ball. In 2016, there were 1,093 children who participated in our sports leagues; 72 participants received financial assistance with a total amount of $5,126. In addition, we had 100+ volunteer coaches step-up to help make a difference in a child’s life. At the YMCA, we continue to build skills and family interaction through our youth sports programs.

Our Youth & Government program creates an environment, in which students can increase their potential awareness and understanding. We currently host Youth & Government clubs at Foy H. Moody , W. B. Ray, and Port Aransas High Schools. Our program allows each student to expand their knowledge in legislative, judicial, media, and state affairs by competing with other Texas high schools at district and state levels. In 2016, we had 52 students compete in Austin, and 15 went to state. Our program provides students an opportunity to meet new people, experience new ideas, and give back to our community by volunteering.

The YMCA also hosts many community outreach events throughout the year. One of which, we partner with Flint hills Resources, is our Shoes for Kids Christmas Event. We meet with the administration at area schools: George Evans, Zavala, and Oak Park Elementary Schools, to determine which students are in most need. Through this event, we are able to provide 150 underprivileged kids a new pair of shoes, socks, a hoodie, a Christmas meal, and gifts, as well as a visit with Santa. We strive to help kids realize their potential, which results in confident teens today and engaged contributing adults tomorrow.

The YMCA, once known as a men’s club, has since evolved to become a place for families and seniors. In 2016, our Partners with Youth Campaign was able to subsidize financial assistance for 141 families with a total amount of $48,349. We are able to provide our members an opportunity to not only become healthy physically, but spiritually. We also offer a Silver Sneakers program, primarily targeting our senior community. With the expansion of our program, seniors are able to get fit and be social. Our members aren’t just members…they are part of our YMCA family.
